Custom Van Builds vs Factory RVs
By Andrew Underhill
When we talk to customers about their van build plans, we hear the same story over and over: they looked at factory RVs first. Then they realized those rigs don’t deliver what they actually need. They’re overbuilt in some areas, undersized in others, and they’re rarely designed for how people actually want to adventure in Southern California.
Factory RVs Aren’t Flexible
Here’s the fundamental problem with factory RVs. They’re built to appeal to the broadest possible market. That means compromises everywhere. You get standard layouts that don’t fit your lifestyle, standard appliances that might not work for your needs, and standard materials that may not stand up to the climate or the kind of use you’re planning.
When we build a custom van, we start by understanding what matters to you. Do you need a full kitchen setup because you’re cooking every night? Or would you rather have more storage and a compact two-burner stove? Are you running a bedroom and office space? How much power do you need? What’s your budget really telling us about your priorities?
Factory RVs can’t answer those questions. You get what they decided to build.
Size and Maneuverability Matter in SoCal
Factory RVs tend to be big, bulky, and rigid. You’re looking at 30-foot Class A motorhomes or sprawling fifth wheels that are expensive to operate, hard to park, and unsuitable for a lot of the terrain Southern Californians actually explore.
A custom van build in a Sprinter, ProMaster, or Transit gives you something else entirely. You can take the van to the trailhead. You can park in regular RV spots or camp in places factory RVs physically can’t fit. You’re not searching for hookups or worrying about towing capacity. The van is your transportation and your home, both at the same time.
Better Climate Control for SoCal Conditions
Southern California gets hot. We’re talking desert heat in the summer, coastal winds that swing the temperature, and unpredictable microclimates depending on where you are. Factory RVs come with whatever HVAC setup fit their cost structure. Often that’s insufficient.
When we design your electrical and cooling system, we account for your actual use pattern. If you’re parking in the Anza-Borrego in July, we’re sizing your solar and battery differently than someone who’s mostly using the van for weekend trips to Big Bear. We use fans, insulation, ventilation, and power management that actually addresses what you’re going to face.
You Know What’s Inside
Custom builds mean you know every component, every system, and every material choice. You’re not guessing about water quality because you chose the tank and water system. You’re not wondering if the insulation is adequate because we walked through the thermal strategy with you. You approved the layout, the appliances, the electrical capacity.
That transparency matters. Factory RVs are a mystery box. You buy it, discover problems six months in, and you’re dealing with warranty claims instead of actually adventuring.
Cost Isn’t Always Higher
People assume custom builds cost more. Sometimes they do. But often they cost less than a comparable factory RV, and you get exactly what you actually need instead of paying for features you’ll never use.
A Basic tier custom van build runs $15K-$30K. A Standard tier is $35K-$55K. A Premium build goes $60K-$100K+. Compare that to factory RVs, where you’re easily looking at $100K-$300K+ for something that doesn’t fit your needs half as well.
When you factor in the resale value, the operational costs, and the fact that you’re not paying for factory overhead and dealership margins, custom van builds make financial sense.
The Real Advantage: It’s Built for You
At the end, the biggest difference between a custom van build and a factory RV is simple. One was built for you. The other was built for whoever walked into the dealership with a down payment.
We’ve been building vans for SoCal adventurers long enough to know what works and what doesn’t. We know the terrain, the climate, the kind of adventures people actually want to take. We build rigs that handle those adventures.
