Van Conversion Cost Guide (2026)

One of the first questions we get from clients is simple: how much does a custom van conversion actually cost?

The honest answer is it depends on your platform, your systems, and how far you want to take it. But we can give you real numbers from our shop in Costa Mesa, CA — not vague ranges or outdated estimates.

Here’s what we’re seeing in 2026 across our three build tiers.

Van Conversion Cost by Tier

We break our builds into three tiers based on scope and component quality. These are package totals that include labor and materials. The vehicle itself is not included.

Basic Tier: $15,000 – $30,000

A Basic build covers the core essentials with quality materials and clean execution. This is a great starting point for weekend adventurers and people who want a functional build without overbuilding.

What’s typically included at this tier: insulation and wall panels, a basic electrical system (usually a single battery with shore power), a simple water setup with a hand pump or small 12V pump, basic cabinetry and a sleeping platform, and a roof vent for ventilation.

Build timeline: 6 to 8 weeks.

Standard Tier: $35,000 – $55,000

This is our most popular tier. You get full off-grid capability, quality appliances, and a layout designed around how you actually use the van.

Standard builds typically include a full lithium battery bank with solar, an inverter for AC power, a proper plumbing system with a water heater, a full kitchen with a cooktop and refrigerator, custom cabinetry built to your layout, a diesel heater for cold-weather use, and exterior upgrades like a roof rack and ladder.

Build timeline: 8 to 12 weeks.

Premium Tier: $60,000 – $100,000+

No compromises. Premium builds get top-tier components, fully custom cabinetry, complete off-grid systems, and finishes that rival a high-end apartment.

Think: large lithium battery banks with redundant charging, full wet bathrooms with a shower and composting toilet, high-end kitchen setups with residential-style appliances, custom hardwood cabinetry, full exterior packages including bumpers, rock sliders, and awnings, and integrated smart systems for monitoring everything from your phone.

Build timeline: 12 to 16+ weeks.

What Affects the Final Price?

A few things that move the number up or down beyond just picking a tier:

Platform matters. Sprinters tend to have more aftermarket support and parts availability. ProMasters have a wider interior that can change the cabinetry approach. Cargo trailers are often the most cost-effective for the square footage you get.

Layout complexity. A straightforward front-to-back layout with a bed in the rear is simpler to build than an L-shaped dinette that converts to a bed with a separate bathroom partition. More complexity means more labor.

Component choices. A Victron electrical system costs more than a budget setup from Amazon, but the reliability and support are worth it for off-grid use. We help you figure out where to spend and where to save.

Custom work. Things like custom metalwork, specialty finishes, integrated bike racks, or unique storage solutions add to the build time and cost.

How Our Pricing Works

We quote every build broken down by system so you can see exactly where your money is going. No lump-sum mystery pricing.

Our payment structure works like this: a $6,000 deposit secures your build slot. When we’re ready to start, you sign the full contract and pay 50 percent of the total (minus the deposit). At the halfway point, 20 percent is due. The remaining balance is due at completion and handoff.
