Pricing Guide

How Much Does a Ford Transit Van Conversion Cost?

Real pricing from our San Diego shop. The Transit's lower vehicle cost gives you more budget for the build — here's exactly how the numbers work.

The Ford Transit is one of the best value propositions in van conversions right now. Not because the build costs less — materials and labor are roughly the same regardless of platform. The advantage is the vehicle itself. A used Transit typically runs $10,000 to $20,000 less than a comparable Sprinter, which means more of your total budget goes toward the actual conversion.

At Emery Custom Builds, every quote is broken down by system — interior, electrical, plumbing, climate control, and exterior — so you see exactly where your money goes. No bundled pricing, no hidden line items. Here's what a professional Transit conversion actually costs in 2026.

These numbers cover labor and materials only. The van itself is separate — you bring the Transit, we build it out.

Transit Conversion Cost by Build Tier

Every build is custom — there are no off-the-shelf packages. But most Transit conversions fall into one of three general ranges based on scope and finish quality:

Basic — $30,000 to $50,000

A fully functional camper van with everything you need to live and travel comfortably. This is a real conversion with real systems — not a half-finished project.

  • Full insulation (Thinsulate walls/ceiling, XPS foam floor)
  • 200W solar, 100–200Ah lithium battery, 1000W inverter
  • Fixed or convertible bed platform
  • Basic kitchen with sink, fresh/gray water tanks, manual or electric pump
  • LED lighting, USB outlets, shore power hookup
  • Maxxair fan for ventilation

Build timeline: 6–8 weeks

Standard — $55,000 to $75,000

The sweet spot for full-time living. Same fundamental systems as Basic, but with more capacity, better finishes, and features that make daily life noticeably easier.

  • 400–600W solar, 200–400Ah lithium, 2000W inverter/charger
  • DC-DC alternator charger for charging while driving
  • Hot water system (Truma Combi or equivalent)
  • Indoor shower with enclosed wet bath or shower stall
  • Diesel heater for climate control
  • Custom cabinetry with solid countertops
  • Composting toilet

Build timeline: 8–12 weeks

Premium — $80,000 to $120,000+

The difference at this tier is craftsmanship, interior finish quality, and how well everything integrates. You're not buying dramatically different components — you're getting a build where every detail is thought through and executed at a higher level.

  • 600–800W solar, 400–600Ah lithium, 3000W inverter
  • Completely hidden wiring throughout
  • Hardwood or premium laminate finishes
  • Multi-zone LED lighting with dimmers
  • Full monitoring system (Victron Cerbo GX or similar)
  • Larger fresh and gray water tanks with filtration
  • Custom storage solutions tailored to your specific gear

Build timeline: 12–16+ weeks

Transit Conversion Cost by System

Here's how costs typically break down by system. These are approximate ranges — your actual numbers depend on what you choose for each system during the design phase.

System Basic Standard Premium
Interior $12K–$20K $22K–$30K $35K–$50K+
Electrical $5K–$8K $8K–$15K $15K–$25K
Plumbing $1.5K–$3K $3K–$5K $5K–$8K
Climate Control $500–$1.5K $2K–$4K $4K–$8K
Exterior $1K–$3K $3K–$5K $5K–$10K

Interior is always the largest cost category because it includes insulation, wall and ceiling panels, flooring, cabinetry, countertops, the bed system, and all the finish carpentry. Electrical is the second-largest and the most variable — a basic lighting and charging setup is straightforward, but a full off-grid system with large solar, big battery bank, and 3000W inverter adds up fast.

Total Project Cost: Vehicle + Build

This is the number most people actually want to know. Your total cost is the van plus the conversion. Here's where the Transit's value proposition really shows up:

Component Basic Standard Premium
Used Transit (high roof) $25K–$35K $30K–$40K $35K–$50K
Conversion $30K–$50K $55K–$75K $80K–$120K+
Total $55K–$85K $85K–$115K $115K–$170K+

Compare that to a Sprinter, where the vehicle alone often starts at $35K to $50K used. On a Basic build, you could be looking at $10K to $15K less all-in just because of the Transit's lower vehicle price. That's real money — it could mean upgrading your electrical system, adding a hot water heater, or just keeping more cash in reserve for the road.

Materials vs. Labor

Across all tiers, the rough split is about 40% materials and 60% labor on a Transit conversion. The materials themselves — batteries, solar panels, plumbing fittings, insulation, wood — are the same regardless of platform. Labor is where the cost scales, because more complex builds require more hours of skilled work: custom cabinetry, hidden wiring runs, precision fit and finish.

We don't mark up materials to pad margins. You see the actual cost of components on your quote. The labor cost reflects the real hours required to build your specific van to a professional standard.

Transit-Specific Cost Factors

A few things that can shift Transit conversion costs compared to other platforms:

  • Roof height choice: The Transit comes in low, medium, and high roof. High roof is standard for full conversions but costs more for both the vehicle and the build (more interior volume to insulate and finish).
  • Wheelbase length: The 148" extended wheelbase is the most popular for conversions. Longer models give you more floor space but add materials cost.
  • AWD models: Factory AWD Transits cost more to buy and require some additional electrical routing considerations, but they don't significantly change the build cost.
  • Narrower body: The Transit is slightly narrower than a ProMaster, which can affect tank placement and layout options. This doesn't usually change cost, but it affects design.

How Payment Works

We don't ask for 100% upfront. Our payment structure is designed to keep things fair and transparent:

  • $6,000 deposit to book your build slot (non-refundable, credited toward your total)
  • 50% of contract value due 30 days before the van arrives at our shop
  • 20% at the build halfway point
  • Remaining balance at completion and handoff

You get a detailed contract with your full scope and pricing before the build starts. The deposit just holds your spot — the final scope and pricing are locked in when you sign the contract at the 50% payment stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a basic Ford Transit conversion cost?

A basic Transit conversion runs $30,000 to $50,000 for labor and materials. That gets you a fully functional camper van with real electrical, real plumbing, insulation, a bed, and a kitchen. The vehicle itself is not included in these numbers.

Is a Transit conversion cheaper than a Sprinter conversion?

The build cost is roughly the same — materials and labor don't change much between platforms. Where you save is on the vehicle. A used Transit typically costs $10,000 to $20,000 less than a comparable Sprinter, which brings your total project cost down significantly.

What's included in the conversion cost?

Everything we install: insulation, interior build-out, electrical system, plumbing, climate control, and exterior modifications. Our quotes are broken down by system so you can see exactly where every dollar goes. The van itself and any pre-build mechanical work are separate.

Does roof height affect Transit conversion cost?

Yes. A high-roof Transit gives you more interior volume, which means more materials for insulation, wall panels, and cabinetry. The build cost difference between a medium and high roof is typically $2,000 to $5,000, but the livability difference is significant — especially for anyone over 5'8".

How long does a Ford Transit conversion take?

Basic builds take 6 to 8 weeks, Standard builds run 8 to 12 weeks, and Premium builds take 12 to 16+ weeks. We'll give you a realistic timeline during the quoting process based on your specific build scope.
