How to Install a Sprinter Trim Kit

A trim kit is the fastest visual upgrade in a Sprinter build. Here's what's in a GoCode kit, the order we install it in, and how it compares to fabricating the same transitions from scratch.

A GoCode Sprinter trim kit covers the pillar, threshold, and headliner transitions with pre-formed ABS panels, and a full interior kit runs roughly $1,140 to $2,140 depending on finish and audio options. GoCode rates the install at under an hour with basic hand tools. Budget half a day if you include removing the factory styrofoam, dry fitting every piece, and running speaker wire. The one rule that matters most: install the trim before your wall and ceiling panels, not after. We install GoCode trim in our own builds at our Encinitas shop.

Strip the factory trim out of a Sprinter and you find the parts Mercedes never meant you to see. The upper corners behind the driver's compartment headliner are hollow. The pillars are bare metal with weld nuts and wire pass-throughs. The door thresholds are unfinished steel with the factory carpet edge stopping wherever the cargo liner used to end.

Every conversion has to close those gaps somehow. You can template them, cut them, and upholster them yourself, or you can buy panels that were vacuum-formed off a scan of the same van. A trim kit is the second option, and it's why a build can go from looking like a cargo van with furniture in it to looking like a vehicle somebody manufactured on purpose.

This guide covers what's actually in a Sprinter trim kit, the order the pieces go in, what the install really takes, and the honest trade against custom fabrication.

What Is a Sprinter Trim Kit?

A Sprinter trim kit is a set of pre-formed panels that cover the transition zones between the factory interior and your build. GoCode Overland's kits are vacuum-formed from 3/16" ABS with a haircell texture, so they hold their shape, take a scuff without showing it, and match the grain of the factory plastic already in the cab.

The panels are shaped to the van, not to a generic curve. That's the whole point. The transitions a Sprinter needs covered are compound curves, and a flat sheet of anything will not sit against them without a fight.

What's in a Full Interior Kit

A full interior kit covers every major transition zone in the van. The core set is:

  • B-pillar panels, driver and passenger: the two pieces that do the most work. They cover the voids in the upper corners at the rear of the factory headliner, the ones left behind when the styrofoam filler blocks come out.
  • Sliding door threshold: covers the step-in transition where the factory liner ends and your flooring begins.
  • C-pillar thresholds: the mid-van transitions between the wall and the door opening.
  • D-pillar rear door threshold: the rear door step, which takes more foot traffic than anything else in the van.
  • Window trim rings: sold per window and per opening type. Half-slider, awning, bunk window, and flare rings are all separate parts.

Finish and Option Choices

  • Standard: raw textured ABS, straight off the mold. The least expensive option, clean on its own, and the right pick if you plan to wrap or upholster the panels yourself.
  • Matte: painted. Flatter and more uniform than raw ABS, which reads more finished next to a dark headliner.
  • Upholstered: covered in Grey Heather, Black, or Toast depending on the piece. This is the option that makes a build look like it came out of a coachbuilder's shop, and it's the one we steer most customers toward.
  • Audio: B-pillar panels with speaker pods formed into them, available with or without speakers included. If there's any chance you want front fill speakers, order this version now. Retrofitting pods into panels you already installed means buying the panels twice.
  • BugWall Fast Track rails: an add-on rail that lets bug screens go in and out without adhesive. Worth deciding on before the trim goes in, since the rail mounts to the same surfaces.

Which Trim Kit Fits My Sprinter?

Fitment is the one thing worth slowing down on, because a trim kit that doesn't fit is a return shipment of large, awkward boxes.

  • Generation: the 2007-2018 NCV3 and the 2019+ VS30 do not share trim. Check your year before anything else.
  • Roof height: high roof and standard roof pillar panels are different parts. Audio kits in particular are usually specified to the high roof.
  • Wheelbase: 144" and 170" vans use the same front pillar pieces but differ in the mid and rear transitions, and window trim rings are specific to the opening.
  • Window openings: trim rings are sold per window and per style. Count your openings and identify each one before ordering, not after.

If you're not sure which generation you have, the quickest tell is the dash and the headlight shape. If you're still unsure, the VIN decodes it.

When in the Build Does the Trim Go In?

Before the wall and ceiling panels. This is the single most common mistake we see, and it's expensive to undo.

Trim panels are designed so the wall and ceiling panels overlap their edges. Install them in that order and every seam is covered and every fastener is hidden. Install the walls first and you're left trimming panel edges to fit around finished surfaces, which is exactly the fussy work the kit was supposed to eliminate.

The sequence that works:

  • Insulation and any wiring that runs behind the pillars, including speaker wire.
  • Furring strips and any structural backing.
  • Trim kit.
  • Wall panels, then ceiling panels, overlapping the trim edges.
  • Flooring and cabinetry.

Note where the speaker wire sits in that list. If you ordered audio B-pillars, the wire has to be run and pulled through before the panel is fastened. Nobody enjoys taking a finished pillar back off.

How Do I Install a Sprinter Trim Kit Step by Step?

Tools You Need

Nothing exotic: a plastic trim removal tool, a T25 Torx bit, a 17mm socket for the seat belt anchor, Allen wrenches, a cordless drill and driver, and a rivet nut tool if your kit calls for rivnuts rather than the factory clip locations.

Step 1: Remove the Factory Trim and Styrofoam

Pop the factory B-pillar covers with a trim tool, working from the bottom edge and taking the clips one at a time. Remove the T25 fasteners, and where the seat belt anchor passes through, the 17mm bolt. Behind the headliner you'll find styrofoam filler blocks. Those come out and don't go back in.

Bag the factory hardware. Some of it gets reused, and even the parts that don't are worth keeping if the van ever goes back to stock.

Step 2: Dry Fit Every Piece

Hold each panel in place before a single fastener goes in. Check three things: how the top edge meets the factory headliner, whether the seat belt path is clear through its full travel, and whether the panel sits flat against the sheet metal or rocks on a high spot.

Pre-formed doesn't mean identical to the last van. Body panel tolerances vary, and it's normal for one side to need a shim or a slightly relieved edge where the other side dropped straight in. Finding that during dry fit costs five minutes. Finding it after you've driven a fastener costs a panel.

Step 3: Install the Sprinter B-Pillar Trim

Start here. The B-pillars set the reference for how the whole kit meets the factory headliner, and if they're off, every piece behind them inherits the error.

Run any speaker wire before the panel goes on. Fasten with the supplied hardware, using the factory clip locations where the kit is designed for them. Snug, not gorilla-tight. ABS will dimple around an over-driven screw and the mark doesn't come out.

Step 4: Slider Door and C-Pillar Thresholds

These sit against the floor and wall surfaces, so they go in while those surfaces are still unfinished. Check the door's full travel with the panel in place before final fastening. The sliding door on a Sprinter passes closer to the threshold than most people expect, and a panel that's proud by a few millimeters will find the door every time.

Step 5: D-Pillar Rear Door Threshold

The rear threshold sees more wear than any other panel in the kit, because it's what everyone steps on getting in and out of the back. Fasten it fully, verify it sits flat with no flex under weight, and check that both rear doors close without touching the panel edge.

Step 6: Window Rings, Rails, and Speakers

Window trim rings go on after the surrounding surfaces are set. If you're running BugWall Fast Track rails, they mount now. Speakers drop into the pods in the audio B-pillars, and this is the moment to test them, while the panel can still come off in under a minute.

Step 7: Final Check

Walk the whole van. Every fastener seated, no panel edge proud of the surface next to it, all four doors closing clean, nothing rattling when you shake a panel with your hand. Then move on to wall and ceiling panels, which overlap the trim edges and lock the whole thing in.

How Long Does a Sprinter Trim Kit Take to Install?

GoCode rates the install at under an hour, and for the panels themselves that's fair. Bolting up a set of pre-formed pieces genuinely is quick work.

What the hour doesn't include is everything around it. Pulling the factory trim and styrofoam, dry fitting each piece, running speaker wire, and shimming the one panel that doesn't drop straight in. Plan on half a day for a full interior kit if you want to do it without rushing the parts that matter. A front kit on its own, B-pillars and slider threshold, is closer to two hours.

Skill level is genuinely low. If you can remove a door card without breaking the clips, you can install a trim kit. The risk isn't difficulty, it's sequence: doing it after the walls are up, or discovering you wanted speaker pods once the panels are already on.

Trim Kit or Custom Fabrication?

We do both, so here's the honest version.

A full interior kit runs roughly $1,140 to $2,140 depending on finish and audio options. Individual pieces are cheaper if you only need part of the coverage: a single B-pillar panel from $200, a slider door threshold kit from $200, a rear door threshold kit from $550, and a front kit covering both B-pillars plus the slider door from $590. Each of those climbs with finish and audio options, so treat them as floors rather than prices.

Fabricating the same transitions from scratch means templating every compound curve in cardboard, transferring to substrate, cutting, test fitting, adjusting, and then upholstering or finishing the result. That is a day or more of shop time for a decent outcome, and considerably more than that for one that looks factory. The material is cheap. The hours are not.

So the math usually favors the kit, and that's what we recommend for most Sprinter builds. Custom fab earns its place in two cases: when the van has a layout the kit wasn't designed around, like a bulkhead or a pillar-mounted cabinet that changes the transition entirely, and when a customer wants a material the kit doesn't come in.

The other thing worth saying plainly: a kit is repeatable. We know what it looks like finished, we know it fits, and we know how long it takes. Custom fab is a good result when there's a reason for it and an expensive way to reinvent a solved problem when there isn't.

What Goes Wrong with Trim Kit Installs?

  • Installing after the wall panels. The most common one and the most annoying to fix. The trim goes in first so the walls overlap its edges.
  • Skipping the audio option, then wanting speakers. Pods are formed into the panel. Adding them later means new panels, not an upgrade.
  • Over-driving fasteners. ABS dimples permanently. Snug is enough.
  • Ordering by model instead of by generation and roof. "Sprinter" isn't a fitment. Year range, roof height, and wheelbase all matter.
  • Forgetting the wire. Speaker wire, and any pillar-routed accessory wiring, has to be pulled before the panel is fastened.
  • Not dry fitting. Body tolerances vary van to van. Five minutes of dry fitting per panel saves the panel.

What About Transit and ProMaster Trim Kits?

Same idea, different tooling. GoCode makes full interior kits for the Ford Transit in both mid roof and high roof, plus B-pillar panels, a bulkhead trim panel, D-pillar kits, and blob covers for the upper pillar voids. The Ram ProMaster line is currently window trim rings, with a full interior kit in the works.

The install logic carries across all three platforms: check fitment by generation and roof, dry fit everything, trim before panels, and decide on audio before you order.

Why We Use Trim Kits in Our Own Builds

We install GoCode trim in our Sprinter builds at our Encinitas shop, and we carry the line in our parts shop for the same reason: it's the part of a build where the money buys the most visible result per hour spent.

A customer walking into a finished van doesn't evaluate the wire gauge or the tank mounting. They look at the transitions. Whether the pillars look finished, whether the door thresholds look intentional, whether the interior reads as one piece instead of a set of parts installed near each other. Trim is what carries that impression, and a pre-formed kit gets there faster than we can fabricate it.

It's also the upgrade that translates best to a build already in progress. If your van is otherwise done and something about the interior still reads unfinished, this is usually what's missing.
