ProMaster Van Interior: Layouts, Design & Build Options
The ProMaster is the widest cargo van on the market. Here's what that means for your conversion layout.
The RAM ProMaster has the widest interior of any cargo van at 6'4" between the wheel wells, making it the most versatile platform for interior layouts. A queen-size mattress fits sideways with room to spare, and the extra width allows side-by-side kitchen and bathroom configurations that narrower vans cannot match. Interior build costs range from $8K-$30K depending on materials and finish level. Emery Custom Builds designs every ProMaster interior custom to the owner's layout and travel style.
What Makes the ProMaster Interior Different From Other Vans?
At 6'4" between the wheel wells, the RAM ProMaster is the widest cargo van available in North America. For comparison, the Mercedes Sprinter measures 5'8" and the Ford Transit comes in around 5'10" at the same point.
Those extra 8 inches don't sound like much on paper, but they change everything about what you can fit inside. Layouts that require awkward compromises in a Sprinter just... work in a ProMaster. We build across all three platforms at our San Diego, CA shop, and the ProMaster consistently opens up options that narrower vans can't match.
What Can You Fit in a 6'4" Wide Van Interior?
Here's how the ProMaster's width changes the most common interior decisions:
- • East-west bed placement: A queen-size mattress (60") fits sideways across the van with room to spare. In a Sprinter, this is a tight squeeze. In a ProMaster, it's comfortable — and you keep the aisle clear during the day.
- • Side-by-side galley and bathroom: You can put the kitchen on one side and a bathroom enclosure on the other without eating all your living space. This is one of the most requested layouts we build.
- • Wider countertops: An extra few inches of counter depth makes a real difference when you're cooking every day. Chopping, prepping, and cleaning all feel less cramped.
- • More storage options: Deeper overhead cabinets, wider under-bed storage, and room for full-size drawers instead of narrow cubbies.

What Are the Best ProMaster Interior Layout Options?
Every ProMaster conversion we build is custom, but most layouts fall into a few proven patterns. The right one depends on how you plan to use the van — weekend trips, full-time living, working remotely, or a mix.
Rear Bedroom Layout
The most popular configuration. A fixed bed across the rear of the van (east-west in a ProMaster), with the kitchen and living area toward the front.
- • Queen-size bed fits comfortably across the 6'4" width
- • Massive under-bed storage (bikes, gear, tools)
- • Kitchen and bathroom get the middle section
- • Best for: full-time living, couples, people who want a dedicated sleeping area
Murphy Bed / Convertible Layout
The bed folds up against the wall during the day, giving you a full open living and workspace. At night, it folds down into a sleeping area.
- • Maximum daytime living space
- • Great for remote workers who need desk/office space
- • Trade-off: daily setup/teardown, less under-bed storage
- • Best for: remote workers, solo travelers who prioritize living space over sleeping convenience
Dinette / Lounge Layout
A bench seat and table area that converts into a sleeping platform at night. Common in the 136" wheelbase where every inch counts.
- • Dedicated eating and working area during the day
- • Converts to full sleeping surface at night
- • Works well in shorter van lengths
- • Best for: weekend warriors, shorter wheelbases, people who want a social space
How Does ProMaster Wheelbase Length Affect Interior Space?
The wheelbase you choose determines how much room you have to work with. Here's how the three ProMaster lengths compare for interior builds:
ProMaster 136" Wheelbase
Cargo length: ~10.5 feet. Good for simpler builds — sleeping, basic kitchen, maybe a portable toilet. You'll make trade-offs on storage and bathroom space. This is the right choice if you want something compact and easy to park, or if you're building on a tighter budget.
ProMaster 159" Wheelbase
Cargo length: ~12.5 feet. The most popular for full conversions. Enough space for a real bathroom, full kitchen, fixed bed, and decent storage. This is what we recommend for most customers planning Standard or Premium builds.
ProMaster 159" Extended
Cargo length: ~14 feet. Maximum interior space. Room for a dedicated workspace, extra storage, or more generous living quarters. If you're living full-time and need room to spread out — or you carry a lot of gear — this is the one.
What Cabinetry and Storage Options Work in a ProMaster?
Good cabinetry is where a professional conversion really separates itself from a DIY build. We build all our cabinets custom to the specific van and layout — no off-the-shelf boxes crammed into place.
- • Overhead cabinets: The ProMaster's width lets us build deeper overheads that actually hold things. Soft-close hinges are standard on all our builds.
- • Under-bed storage: With a raised fixed bed, you get a huge garage underneath. We add slide-out drawers, pull-out trays, or open access depending on what you carry.
- • Kitchen cabinetry: Pull-out drawers, spice racks, trash bins, and utensil organizers. We design these around how you actually cook.
- • Material options: Baltic birch plywood is our go-to for most builds. Premium builds can use walnut, oak, or other hardwoods for a more refined look.

What Kitchen Options Are Available in a ProMaster Van?
The kitchen is the heart of most van builds. In a ProMaster, you have room for a layout that actually works for daily cooking — not just heating up canned food.
- • Cooktop: Two-burner propane, induction, or a combination. Induction requires more electrical capacity but keeps things cleaner.
- • Fridge: 12V compressor fridge (Dometic, Isotherm, or Vitrifrigo). Sizes range from 50L to 130L depending on your space and eating habits.
- • Sink: Stainless steel undermount is most popular. Bar-size or full-size depending on counter space.
- • Countertop: Butcher block, solid surface, or stone. Each has weight, durability, and cost trade-offs.
What Do People Ask Most About ProMaster Interiors?
Can you fit a queen bed sideways in a ProMaster?
Yes — the ProMaster is 6'4" between the wheel wells, and a standard queen mattress is 60" wide. That leaves about 16" of clearance, which is plenty for bedding and a small shelf on each side. This is one of the biggest advantages over narrower platforms.
What's the standing height inside a ProMaster?
The high-roof ProMaster gives you about 6'3" of interior height. Most adults can stand comfortably, which makes a big difference for cooking, getting dressed, and just moving around. We recommend the high-roof model for any full conversion.
What type of insulation do you use?
We use 3M Thinsulate for the walls and ceiling — it handles moisture well and doesn't compress over time. Floors get XPS foam board for rigidity and thermal performance. The specific approach depends on the climate you'll be in and your build scope.
Can I see examples of ProMaster interiors you've built?
Absolutely. Head over to our project gallery to see completed builds with interior photos and descriptions. Each project page shows the layout, materials, and systems used.
How much does a ProMaster interior build cost?
Interior costs range from $8K to $30K depending on materials, complexity, and finish level. See our full ProMaster conversion cost breakdown for per-system pricing.
